It is impossible to underestimate the social and emotional impact that dentures have on denture wearers. In response to the need for clinical and laboratory materials which make prosthodontic privacy achievable, in 1996 Dr. John Besford and Ruth Bourke began collaborating with dental manufacturer Davis, Schottlander & Davis on the creation of a system which allowed doctor and technician to create dentures that looked so much like the patient's natural teeth and gums that no one except the patient would know they were wearing a denture. After more than five years research and development, their efforts culminated in the creation of the Enigma Denture System. The Enigma Denture System has been so successful that in 2004 it won the Queen's Award for Industry, a unique occurrence in dentistry.
At its core is a range of denture teeth that exploit advanced computer technology to achieve precise control of multiple color-component layers, natural opalescence and fluorescence, and completely uniform polymerization in a wide range of shades and molds. Also included is an impact-resistant acrylic base material, and a range of Color Tone acrylics which replicate the hues of natural gingiva. Used in combination the resultant dentures look exceptionally natural and possess outstanding strength and durability.
"Dr. John Besford's foundational philosophy, the inspiration for the Enigma System, centers not just on technical excellence, but also on an authentic belief in the transforming power of the emotional component of personal prosthodontics for both the patient and the dental team."
